Serra Mesa's real estate is undergoing a dramatic reconstruction. While the area was built to serve as military housing after World War II, these mass-produced buildings are now being replaced with villages of townhomes to make the area more aesthetically pleasing and satisfying to live in.

The most extensive housing that the Navy has ever built, Serra Mesa's new 900 units are made up of two- and three-story townhomes, some complete with elegant touches like cobblestone streets. Many homes have extra amenities inside, like washers and dryers, and some complexes have clubhouses and other gathering places for their owners.

The area also has a more residential feel with the addition of park space for kids and families to play in; seven acres have been added. The streets have new landscaping, and the commercial structures in the area are adding new architectural touches to their facades. The effect is a more open, homey space.

Where large firms like General Dynamics once stood, small businesses are going up. This means that residents of Serra Mesa are getting the great shopping and convenience that they used to have to leave the area for.

Nearby National University has been changing as well. The university just put up a new library facility and classrooms, making for a richer educational experience for the students who attend—mainly local residents.

The area is a great one in which to raise a family. Serra Mesa's kids belong to the San Diego Unified School District, one of the best in the state. Children's Hospital is nearby, as is Sharp Memorial Hospital.

The median price of a home last year was $485,000 in the area. As the renovations continue, however, these prices are almost certain to go up, and those who purchase Serra Mesa real estate sooner will watch their values appreciate.
