Del Mar Real Estate

Del Mar is known all over the United States for its famous racetrack. But what draws in prospective buyers isn't necessarily what keeps them there. While people come to see the horses or maybe the San Diego County Fair, they stay in Del Mar because of it gorgeous custom-built homes, designed to maximize the panoramic views of the Pacific provided by the area's coast-grazing hills.

Del Mar gained attention during Hollywood's Golden Age, when celebrities would drive down from Los Angeles to play the horses and spend some time in their retreat. While the area still sees its share of celebrity, it is now a much more resident-focused community—but with the same luxuries that the Silver Screen sirens enjoyed. That means that right alongside four-star restaurants are organic grocery stores and surf-inspired boutiques. At a weekly farmer's market, residents linger alongside tourists. And many of the residents are employees of the nearby prestigious Salk Institute, Scripps Clinic or the University of California at San Diego. The sense of community in Del Mar is strong.

Also strong is the Del Mar real estate market. With limited real estate space remaining available, very few new homes are built every year. Instead, investors have put money into remodeling existing homes, taking advantage of modern architecture to create beautiful vantage points within their homes and safer accommodations along the bluffs. Condominium development is recent in Del Mar; most are right along the beach and are used as secondary homes for weekend residents.

In February 2006, the average price of a single-family home in Del Mar was $1.94 million; although property is available for between $700,000 and $8.5 million.

For your investment, residence in Del Mar guarantees a great public school education—older students attend Torrey Pines High School, one of the best in Southern California—and plenty of activities for children. The city library runs numerous kids' programs, and organized sports are in abundance in the area.

After school, you'll be able to take advantage of Torrey Pines State Reserve and, of course, the sandy beaches of Del Mar.
