Vallejo has a reputation for having some of the most affordable housing in the Bay Area. The town's history is steeped in shipping, and today there are approximately 120,000 residents. Vallejo is well known by other Bay Area residents because it is home to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Northern California's only combination wildlife, oceanarium and theme park covering 135 acres of land. However, there is a lot more to the town outside of the amusement park. According to the city's website, “The city's Ferry Terminal and ferry service have served as a model for the rest of the Bay Area, helping make Vallejo a transportation and commuter hub for the North Bay. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, restaurants and the Downtown Farmer's Market help make Vallejo the vibrant community it is today.”
Vallejo is only 32 miles from San Francisco, and the affordable home prices make it an attractive place for those who work in the city, but want to invest in Bay Area real estate. As mentioned above, the ferry terminal makes commuting to San Francisco very convenient, as it is only 55 minutes. Potential home owners should know that homes in Vallejo run the gamut from lower income housing to beautiful Victorian homes with lovely manicured yards. There are some newer developments being built, some with condominiums and some planned communities, to serve in the influx of residents.
The San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 12,000 acres of land along the northern edge of San Pablo Bay between Vallejo and the Petaluma River. It lies along the north shore of San Pablo Bay in Sonoma, Solano, and Napa Counties and the terrain includes open marsh, mud flats, and wetland habitats. The refuge provides habitat for endangered, threatened, and sensitive shorebirds and waterfowl. The San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a prime spot for birdwatchers.
