The downtown area has a nice small-town feel with modest stores, independent shops, and restaurants and bars.

In the late 1990's South San Francisco was, and still is, an important place for biotechnology. Though the large sign on the South San Francisco hillside as seen from 101 states, “South San Francisco The Industrial City,” it is now known for its biotechnology companies such as Genetech. In addition, the famous Sees candy is headquartered in South San Francisco.

As stated on the city's website: “South San Francisco occupies the basin and portions of the sides of a broad valley formed by the San Bruno Mountains on the north and the Coast Range on the west. Most of the valley faces adjacent San Francisco Bay, affording sweeping vistas from higher levels and a definite sense of identification with the Bay. South San Francisco has mild winters and dry, cool summers. The hills to the west shield the city from much of the fog that prevails in neighboring areas.”

Many families call South San Francisco home, and the great school systems make buying a home in South San Francisco even more attractive. The city has two high schools, El Camino and South San Francisco, and together the schools serve approximately 10,500 students. The school has a low student-teacher ratio of about 21:1, 94% of seniors graduate, and 89% of those graduates go on to pursue higher education opportunities.
