Hercules is located in the western portion of Contra Costa County, one of the nine counties comprising the Bay Area just east of San Francisco. It is a 6.5 square mile town with a population of approximately 23,731 people. Hercules stretches from San Pablo Bay inland to the rolling coastal hills. The climate can best be described as Mediterranean, meaning that residents enjoy cool summer breezes and mild winter days.
Hercules began as the California Powder Works company town in 1881. The city was named after Hercules, the legendary Greek hero known for his strength. During World War One, the Hercules plant served as the largest producer of TNT in the country. The cty of Hercules provides a full range of recreational programs including youth, teen and adult activities, year-round child care, and several major community events. The Senior Center provides daily senior programs and activities, and it sponsors special community events and trips.
The 2000 census found that the median household income was approximately $80,639. Residents of Hercules are served by two school districts, Julian Swett Unified School District and the West Contra Costa Unified School district, and boast impressive academic honors. Hercules' high school has approximately 3,287 students, and a student-teacher ratio of 25:1.
According to the city's website: “The City of Hercules maintains an abundance of open space areas and trails throughout the community, providing the opportunity for spotting various types of wildlife and offering dazzling views of the bay.” Hercules has two community and five neighborhood parks. Open space and city parks account for approximately 1/3 of the total land area within the City. In addition, the great climate, access to the San Pablo Bay, wine country, Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, a number of other recreational get-a-ways, and some of the more affordable housing in the area make Hercules an attractive place to live.
