Calistoga, home to approximately 5,100 residents, is located in the heart of Napa County. Calistoga is a popular destination for tourists, as the area is famous for its geothermal hot springs, mineral water and home to California's Old Faithful Geyser. The town is also home to the Napa County Fairgrounds.
Calistoga, just 2.6 square miles, is located at the foot of Mt. St. Helena, bordered by the Mayacamas Range in the west, and the Howell Mountain range to the east. In 1860, Samuel Brannan built a spa resort to attract vactioners. In 1868, the railroad arrived, and Calistoga became the "Saratoga of California." Today, there are almost twenty spa resorts, with garden patios, private whirlpools and mud baths, massage salons and romantic accomodations. For spa enthusiasts, these resorts along with restaurants and boutique shops make Calistoga a definite go-to-spot in Northern California. The mineral mud baths are a particular favorite among visitors.
Calistoga offers other attractions as well, including Bale Grist Mill State historic park, along with hot-air baloon rides, and visits to the Sharpstein Museum and the Petrified Forest. The Petrified Forest attracts thousands of visitors every year, and geologists call this attraction one of the finest examples of a pliocene fossil forest in the world.
Students are served by the excellent schools of the Calistoga Joint Unified School District, which has three schools, an elementary school serving grades K-6; a middle school and a high school. The graduation rate of high school seniors is at 100%, with 90% of graduating seniors seeking higher education opportunities.
