Incorporated in 1992, American Canyon is one of the newest cities in California. Located at the southeastern end of Napa County, American Canyon is roughly 3.6 square miles in size. The city is bounded by the Napa River to the west, the foothills of the Sulpher Springs Mountain Range to the east, the city of Vallejo to the south and the Napa Airport to the north.
Highway 29--the world famous "Napa Valley Winery Trail"--travels though American Canyon and intersects with Highway 12. Highway 12 travels east to connect with I-80, a major transportation vien of the East Bay region. The climate is generally mild, with northeasterly winds from the San Francisco Bay.
Housing in American Canyon consists mainly of single-family homes. This area, now home to approximately 14,300 residents is expected to expand in the next few years to more than 22,000. Neighborhoods range from older to high-end new subdivisions. Most homes were built only in the last 20 years. Housing prices, remain moderate, in spite of the proximity to San Francisco, just 40 miles away. There are also some modular and mobile homes available. The average sales price for a single family home or condo home was $551,073 in May 2006, making American Canyon an affordable choice for Bay Area housing.
American Canyon has over 50 acres of developed parkland, ranging from tot lots to a 20-acre community park. The city owns a large open space on its western edge that is now being restored as wetlands with recreational facilities. The 640-acre Newell Open Space preserve with planned hiking and horse trails is located on the eastern border of the city.
Students are currently served by the Napa Valley Unified School District. There are currently two elementary schools and one middle school in town. The nearly 1,000 high school students are transported to Vintage High School in Napa. Plans are underway to build a new high school in American Canyon. The new high school will be designed to accomodate 2,400 students.
